AC Milan legend says Alessio Romagnoli can become a club great

AC Milan legend Serginho has said that Alessio Romagnoli has the potential within himself to develop into a top-class defender like Alessandro Nesta. The Italy international endured a tough beginning to the season with form and fitness concerns, but he has managed to revive his form during the backend of the campaign where the Rossoneri are right in the hunt for the top four.

Speaking to Tuttosport, Serginho praised the abilities of Romagnoli and suggested that he can reach the heights of Nesta and Paolo Maldini at the club, he told the publication: “[Alessio] Romagnoli is a great defender and he’s growing a lot. He’s a different player to Nesta, but they are both great defenders. Alessio is young, he can grow to become as good as Nesta and Maldini. Milan started the season poorly but the arrival of new players has allowed Gattuso to create the right balance. They are playing with greater continuity. Milan needs strong ownership, a good environment in the locker room and great players. Rino [Gattuso] has won a lot with Milan, he knows the importance of the shirt so he can change the team’s mentality.”

Milan had recently gone on a six-match winning streak which propelled them to the third position in the standings. However, they have since dropped back to the fourth spot after arch-rivals Inter did the league double over them before the international break. The Rossoneri are currently four points ahead of fifth-placed AS Roma in the standings but Gattuso will be hoping that the team can return to winning ways at the end of the month.

Milan are scheduled to face Sampdoria on the road in their next league game on March 30 and they could be up for a tricky encounter. The San Siro giants have managed just five wins from 13 away matches this term.
